A COMPARISON

Unraveled vs. algorithmic playlists

How a weekly artist edition compares with Discover Weekly, Release Radar and other recommendation playlists, and when to use each.

Streaming services are very good at recommending songs. Weekly personalized playlists such as Spotify’s Discover Weekly and Release Radar, or Apple Music’s New Music Mix, give you a batch of tracks chosen from your listening. They are quick to try and easy to skip. What they rarely give you is a reason to care about the artist behind a song, or somewhere sensible to go next.

When a playlist is the better tool

If you want background music, a long queue for a commute, or a quick sample of many new tracks, an algorithmic playlist is hard to beat. It needs no attention and it refreshes on its own.

When an edition is the better tool

If you keep liking songs and forgetting who made them, or your recommendations have started to sound like the same few artists, an edition helps. Knowing an artist’s story and where to start gives one good song a better chance of becoming a favorite.

Use both

They are not competitors for your ears. Use Unraveled to decide which artists are worth your time, then follow them in the streaming service you already pay for. Listening to them there feeds that service’s recommendations too.
