A LISTENING GUIDE

Two routes into modern soul

Start with Aaron Frazer and Katie Tupper, then follow the voice that stays with you.

A useful first listen needs somewhere to begin and a reason to keep going. This short route pairs two artists working around soul from different starting points. Try one song from each before choosing whose story to read. You do not need to work through either discography in order.

Aaron Frazer

Begin with a voice you may already know

Frazer first gained recognition as the drummer and co-lead vocalist of Durand Jones & the Indications. His solo catalog gives that voice more room, from Introducing… to Into the Blue and the Corners EP. Start with Bad News, then try Easy To Love. On your second listen, ask what holds your attention: the vocal, the rhythm, or the writing. That is a more useful clue for your next discovery than deciding whether you like an entire genre.

Katie Tupper

Follow the thread to Saskatoon

Tupper’s label describes a practice spanning writing, performance, arranging and production, rooted in Saskatoon and crossing indie and neo-soul. Tennessee Heat and She Said are the two entry points in our artist feature. Give each its own listen, then return to the one you would send a friend. These picks introduce a catalog; they are not a ranking or a claim that the two artists sound identical.
