McKinley Dixon turns memory, community, and storytelling into a connected body of work
In interviews, he links his work to Black experience, saying, “I want to tell stories,” and describing his approach as “musical time travel.” The sources also frame his albums as collaborative projects recorded across places and time, with ideas drawn from literature, family, and the people around him. On 2025’s Magic, Alive!, he extends that method into a story about three kids trying to bring a friend back, while earlier releases show the same attention to interlocking ideas and recurring themes. Start with a song from each end of that arc and listen for how the albums connect.
